Club America got off to a sluggish start to the Mexican Liga MX season and will try to get rolling Saturday when it hosts Necaxa at Estadio Azteca. America dominated its match with Queretaro in its July 22 opener but settled for a 0-0 draw, while Necaxa was blown out 3-0 by Santos Laguna the following day. America has been a consistent winner in Liga MX the past few seasons, losing in the quarterfinals in both liguillas during the 2020-21 season. Necaxa won just two games to finish last in the Clausura after ending up 10th in the Apertura.

Kickoff from Mexico City is set for 8 p.m ET. Club America is the -170 favorite (risk $170 to win $100) in the latest Club America vs. Necaxa odds from William Hill Sportsbook. Necaxa is the +490 underdog, while the over-under for total goals scored is set at 2.5. Why you should back Club America

Las Aguilas have some top players competing for Mexico in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, but several of their main scorers remain. Richard Sanchez will be the focal point of the attack, creatively distributing the ball and scoring if he finds an opportunity. Roger Martinez will take the place of Henry Martin at striker, and he will pose a big danger for a Necaxa defense that allowed six shots on target in the opener. Sanchez and Martinez both scored five goals last season.

Six players scored at least five times over the two 2020-21 seasons, and Sanchez had five assists. Martin and young star Francisco Cordova are in Tokyo, but forward Federico Vinas and defender Emanuel Aguilera each scored seven. America will want to move beyond a frustrating draw where it dominated possession at 57 percent and had a 16-4 advantage in shots. Las Aguilas outscored their opponents 18-7 as they went 8-1-1 in the last 10 regular-season games.

Why you should back Necaxa

Los Rayos have been spending to bolster the roster, and Uruguayans Vicente Poggi, Agustín Oliveros and Fabricio Formiliano are key newcomers. Poggi scored twice last season as a midfielder for Defensor in Uruguay's Primera Division, while Oliveros started all 27 games for league champion Nacional. Formiliano just signed Monday and should bring veteran leadership to a defense that has struggled. He appeared in 117 games over four Primera Division seasons.

Necaxa struggled to defend last weekend and hopes Formiliano can make a difference, but it put a lot of pressure on Santos. Facing the Clausura playoff runner-up, Necaxa held the ball for 53 percent of the match and had a 20-15 advantage in shots. Los Rayos could find success against an America club missing some of its top players, and it had gone unbeaten in seven straight league matches against Las Aguilas before the April loss.
